The only thing that keeps me happy in summer is Ice Cream & Retail Therapy (online preferably). A lot of people look forward to summer not because they love the sun (in India, not many people do) but they love summer vacays. So, I have decided to break this post into three parts- this is part 1 (duh!) where I talk about the trends that are worth your while and part 2 (coming soon) where I show you the much talked about “airport looks” and part 3 (coming later) how to travel light & right.

We don’t take heavy luggage; we bring it back- if you know what I mean.

Anyway, stop yapping and start scrolling!

#Trend Alert 1: Dress Over Pants

We all love ourselves some short summer dresses but what takes it a notch higher is- dressing over pants. It is so chic and cuts you some slack on “keep your legs together while you sit”. Let’s face it, dresses are feminine and sitting cross legs all day is not always possible. Lol! Rock ‘em over pants and when you’re going from day to night- you can lose ‘em pants. Erm… your call totally!

#Trend Alert 2: The Power of Pink

You really must be living under some rock, if you haven’t seen “pink” everywhere this season. Runway to reality is now easy peasy (lemon squeezy- ya whatever) because all you gotta do is- work some PINK! Honestly, I have never really loved pink as much but the more I see it (or wear it), the more it grows on me. It suits every single skin tone and every single body type. So get yourself a pair of pink pants or a pink top or pink chunky earrings or all of it. Barbie-ing all the way- heck yeah!

#Trend Alert 3: Boiler Suit

There’s something about jumpsuits (and now boiler suits) that is oh-so sexy without showing too much skin. Well, you may… if you’re pulling some “buttchella” from Coachella but I reckon, you put on simple yet solid Boiler Suit and give everyone #newwardrobe goals!

#Trend Alert 4: Slip Dresses

I have been hearing about slip dresses for last couple of years and TBH, the trend never hit home with me- until now. Reason? Now it looks more than a negligee and the variety is yummy! There are so many options available in slip dresses and while you work it sexy, you can work it comfy- by pairing it with sneakers. More inspiration? Create some, I say!

#Trend Alert 5: Animal Print

This one is evergreen to someone like me but if you’re not on board yet, you still have time. It is the literally the easiest way to look “high fashion” without spending a bomb. Just one thing- don’t overdo it if you can’t pull it off. Keep it simple (I rarely say that) by starting with one element- be it a top or the skirt or the pants or maybe on your bag. Take.it.slow.

#Trend Alert 6: Utility Pants

Cool Cat’s go to outfit! Utility pants & a nice tee (or top)! Now, you pair it with chunky sneakers or kitten heels- that depends on your mood. I love wearing Utility Pants with kitten heels because there’s something really attractive about pairing sporty with sexy.

#Trends Alert 7: Chunky Sneakers/ Dad Sneakers

You can love them or you can hate them but you definitely CAN’T ignore them. The first time when they hit “street fashion”, I was a bit on the fence because it looked great on some people and looked rather foolish on some people. But, the more I see it, the more I like it. And for me it’s like heels on steroids! Come on! You got heels, comfort, style and statement- all rolled into one. Gotta love this one. Non, madame?

#Trend Alert 8: Barely there sandals

Literally what it reads. Barely there. Again- you can’t go wrong with bare feet not being bare. Bare feet like we know are sensual and when they look bare without being bare- it’s that right foot-tease for the perfect look. What’s more? It goes with almost anything you wear because hello! it’s bare 😉
PS: You’ll see this as one of the Airport Looks! Yup. I’m catching a plane next time in my barely there’s.

#Trend Alert 9: Headbands

Bad hair days or not- fashion always to the rescue. Tie-up your hair when a bad hair day strikes is kind of passé! Now, you just wear headbands & look glam! So, it’s not just your immediate cure for bad hair day- basically now it’s every day hair thing. I mean- why colour those tresses when you can just wear colored bands with knots and puffs! Ok fine, go colour them if that’s your thing but do wear a headband, sometime! Okay? 🙂

Come back for more! Does 1st May work for you? Holla back.

ODD-CAT believes in the philosophy of celebration. I celebrate not just festivals / occasions but also people who are admirable and inspirational in more ways than one. It’s Women’s Day and I couldn’t think of a better day to express how I overwhelmed I am, thinking of the women who not only have accomplished but also inspired. The very first person who comes to my mind is my mum (no surprises here) who has made me who I am today and also set an example of a brave woman in my life. Truly, standing up for what’s right and expressing her thoughts no matter what day or age it may have been. Also, she is part reason to why I am ODD-CAT. From my childhood, I remember- I would love to dress up and will perpetually drive her crazy over my clothes etc. All she would say to me was- wear whatever you want to wear, as long as you carry it! This kind of stayed with me to an extent that I would OVERDRESS and then work the hell outta it!

Shruti Kapur Malhotra
(Editor-in-chief: Platform Magazine) Editor of a “one of a kind” talent magazine that also shares the same philosophy of “recognizing & celebrating” people!

shruti_kapur_oddcat

We asked her a few questions that give us an insight into her “beautiful mind”.

  1. Describe your journey as a magazine editor of a talent magazine. It’s exciting, challenging and extremely inspiring.
  2. Who would you pick as “new talent on the block” in the world of women? Any genre. Avani Rai, Photographer, Shubhangi Swarup, Writer
  3. What is your take on #metoo movement in India? Any story/ incident you’d like to share. I stand for ethical and responsible artistic and individual practices and extend my support to the #metoo movement.
  4. Who is your favorite style icon? What’s your personal style like? Don’t really have a style icon. My personal style leans more towards comfort and functionality. However, I like to add that one twisted/ unassuming element to the look.

Promila Jain Bahri
(Entrepreneur- Li’l Tomatoes & BollyGoods, Singer & Photographer)promila_bahri_oddcat

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself- your profession & life interests. I am a design addict who has enjoyed a prolific innings in the world of aesthetics. In the world of fashion, ahead of the time, I founded the first ever India born kids wear label Li’l Tomatoes. 2015, with BollyGoods, I found yet another creative bastion in bringing tinsel town to the capital city like never before.
  2. Describe your journey as a woman- a curator, singer and photographer: a woman of many talents. I am a trained singer of classical and popular Indian music whose performing career is expanding. I produced a contemporary version of Vande Mataram– Re Strung bringing home a strong gender message that “Mother, through you we become men of tomorrow”. The single was launched by Universal Music and is available on iTunes, Amazon, Artist Aloud, Airtel, Vodafone etc. I have now taken on photography and exploring the world (through my lens), Kumbh being the latest.
  3. What’s your take on #metoo movement in India? Any story/ incident you’d like to share? I have been a strong woman from the very beginning and did not ever have to bend forward for any favors. God has been great. But having said that, this movement has certainly raised awareness among women about their rights as individuals in the work place or outside and helped men understand the consequences of the same. Only when we have strong characters and stand up for our rights, will justice prevail.
  4. Who is your favorite style icon? What’s your personal style like? Anaita Shroff Adajania & Sarah Jessica Parker. My Style – Comfortable, Boho; Mix & Match and make my own statement.

Mamta Agarwal
(Designer, Label: Designs by M)mamta_agarwal_oddcat

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself- your profession & life interests. I am a Fashion Designer and run a design studio in Delhi, doing mostly Indian Wear & Fusion Wear for Women & now kids.
  2. Describe your journey as a woman- from a daughter to a wife to a mom and back to being a daughter. I know you have made some life choices and would love to know how it defines you, now. My journey hasn’t been easy but it has been worth it. From being a li’l rebel to being a fulfilled woman, it has been a roller coaster to say the least. I have always followed my dreams whether it was studying subjects of my choice (Fashion Graduate from Pearl Academy of Fashion, MBA from Symbiosis Institute of Business Management) or running a small design studio that was a 40km self-driven trek (with 2 tiny toddlers) or donating an organ to my father. It has always been challenging but extremely fulfilling, to say the least. However, my toughest times were recuperating after I (willingly and happily) donated a kidney to my ailing father. The surgery was successful for my dad and I, but what came after was a blow! Not prepared for never-ending physio sessions to hormonal imbalances to constant medical tests, it was physically and emotionally draining. But, thanks to my spiritual leanings in Guruji & Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, I have battled it all, showing the power of manifestation. There’s not a dream I haven’t fulfilled- latest being my meeting with Mr. Amitabh Bacchan. I met him not as a fan but as Mamta Agarwal, a proud organ donor who is inspiring lives.
  3. What’s your take on #metoo movement in India? Any story/ incident you’d like to share. I am totally in support of the #metoo movement. I believe it’s very important for all women to make a mark of their own and it’s not easy looking at the roles we play as a woman. However, we should come out and support each other and celebrate womanhood. About sharing an incident- I remember, as a child, my only scare was not to get raped (naturally so, looking at the state of our society). But, my mom- being a strong woman, taught me to be one. Once, I had gone to a gold links mela. I must have been around 11 or 12 years old and this guy came beside me and touched me from behind. I was scared and was crying when my aunt asked me what was going on. I told her about this slimy fellow behind us and she turned around and slapped him hard across his face. Later, she told me to do the same thing and not be scared of such perverts. In my growing years, my brother and my mom would tell me how safety is important and how I must be strong and look after myself. Today, I have a teenage daughter and I have inculcated the same values into her- of being strong, independent and never being defeated.
  4. Who is your favorite style icon? And what’s tour personal style like? My most fav style icon is Sonam Kapoor and my friend, Aanchal (not saying this because she’s featuring me in this), the founder of ODD-CAT. I have always loved the way she dresses up and carries herself in whatever she wears. My personal style is simple, elegant and comfortable. I love dressing up for myself on a daily basis. I am dressed for the work and use make up daily to look the part. I think dressing up for me is an extension to myself. I had got custom hospital gowns/ sleep sets for myself post surgery because I didn’t want to look and feel like a patient. Talk about obsession with style. And finally, my biggest secret to look good and feel good is meditation.

Geeta Bector
(Entrepreneur, Cremica Foods, Zoet Desserts)geeta_bector_oddcat

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself- your profession & life interests. I have been the creative food head at Cremica Foods. Developed all sauces and condiments for 15 years. Had bakery passion and continued to work on that too. Successfully ran a home bakery in Punjab for many years.
  2. Did you at any point want to give up? If yes, how did you push forward? I moved to Delhi from Punjab, 10 years back and almost gave up work as settling in took time. Also, the fear of bigger city and making a mark here looked daunting. Coaxing from my kids made me give it a try and that’s how Zoet came about. The happy customer feedback keeps us trying to better ourselves. And, we are growing.
  3. What’s your take on #metoo movement in India? Any story/ incident you’d like to share? I hope that sharing and standing together with many has helped women become stronger.
  4. Who is your favorite style icon? What’s your personal style like? Favorite style icons are many- from Audrey Hepburn to Madonna to both my mothers to many more. My take back from them is whatever you wear, wear it with confidence, because that’s what gets projected not the clothes, they are always no.2. Personally, I’m best in edgy but comfy clothes!

Kanika Sethi
(Wedding Planner & Hospitality Consultant)

kanika_sethi_oddcat

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself- your profession & life interests. I have been very fortunate to have lived a life filled with diversity & intercultural experiences having grown up in the Middle East and studied and worked in the US & India. This has given me best friends all over the world and an intrinsic nomadic spirit which has only been further fuelled by a very loving, crazy and absolutely rock solid family😍. I am a strong believer that a well defined purpose is really all we can own and that ultimately becomes our security blanket . I attempt this through our intellectual property ‘The Bespoke Woman’. My hobbies include writing, travelling to quaint places, cooking for my family and friends and eating good food.
  2. Did you ever at any point think to give up? I have never wanted to give up on my profession. However, there was a time when I needed to slow down a little bit to realign our strategy and modus operandi.
  3. What’s take on #Metoo movement in India? Is there any story you would like to share? It is a bold movement that I support wholeheartedly. There should be a structured, swift punishment to anyone found guilty. Cases shouldn’t drag on either as it takes its toll on the victims/survivors and all matter is lost. I have not had such an experience & I truly empathise with any individual who has. If I did encounter an individual who made an unparliamentary move, I would ensure severe punishment for the perpetrator and make them incapable of even thinking in a twisted manner, leave alone making a physical move.
  4. Who is your personal style icon? Any style tips and your personal style? My three biggest style icons are Sushmita Sen, Salma Hayek and Meryl Streep. Flatter your assets but also be comfortable. My personal style is very elegantly sexy but definitely comfortable.

Tarinni Khattar
(Management Consulting Manager- Accenture)

tarinni_khattar_oddcat

  1. Tell us a bit about yourself- your profession & life interests. I work with clients to transform the way organisations work in today’s digital age and am truly passionate about people matters and the intersection of technology and human behaviour. Other interests include music, travelling and calligraphy.
  2. Did you ever at any point want to give up? Yes – excess work hours and nonstop travel made didn’t let me focus on myself, family or friends! I am constantly making a conscious effort to bring in a balance.
  3. What is your take on me too in india? Any story you would like to share? First time women (and men) came together in one voice but the campaign needs to sustain itself to truly bring change. Multiple stories to share – name calling on the way to school, autodrivers/Uber Driver’s making inappropriate remarks and looking at places they have no business to, being groped by a random man at the age of 8 in a random delhi market to name a few.
  4. Who is your personal style icon? Any style tips and your personal style? Deepika Padukone – keep it simple and classy! Highlight one thing and one thing at a time only – for example, either go for strong eyes or heavy lips. Similarly, keep the clothes simple and go for one contrasting accessory – for me it’s typically some sort of jewellery.

Celebrating people is a complete joy. More so, when we are talking about women who are always putting their best foot forward. Happy Women’s Day y’all! Keep Shining.

Xx

With everyone’s new anthem being #apnatimeaayega, we thought we must jump on this hip-hop bandwagon and show y’all how we are lovin’ this whole hip-hop scene in India!

I am not so happy to admit that I felt I was living under some rock. I had no clue that rap/ hip-hop is some kind of an underground culture in our country. It’s quite big and quite fashionably on-point. The outtake is- I’m learning something new. Yay! My knowledge was kind of limited to Badshah & Diljit Dosanjh thanks to mainstream Bollywood. And another revelation came about when I tuned into #koffeewithkaran and was really blown away with the swag the 2 Indian pop-artists (?) had.

Moving on… I decided to uncover some of our desi style icons and I gotta declare- they are totally workin’ it.

Meet #1 Vivian aka D I V I N E
This rapper from Mumbai has rapped his way into Bollywood, with #gullyboy. From rapping on the streets of Mumbai to the hearts of the country, his journey has nothing been short of ah-mazing! The character MC Sher in Gully Boy is inspired from his life. What a character! On screen & off-screen.
What I dig about his style? His honesty that comes through- “I am what I am” attitude bundled with a whole lotta BOLDNESS.

Meet #2 NaezythebaA (Naved Shaikh)
When reality is cruel and the only choice you have is to rise UP! Meet this fella from the gullies of Mumbai where crimes were common and knowledge (let’s say- education) was uncommon. He fought his way out of it all and made a name for himself, rapping in his very own mother tongue; never ashamed of how crude it could sound! (Ouch! Spoken like a Delhiite, lol!)

What I dig about his style? Mostly, he is “HAT-ing” it. Wearing a “hat”, duh! And I gotta say, he works it each time.

Meet #3 Raftaar (lesser known as Dilin Nair)
Oh, I’m sure you know this one! He is famous not just for his rap but also for busting some incredible dance moves. He might be a Malyali but his vibe is very Punjabi! He often speaks of- being united (rising above cast and culture) and embracing everything he is born with! His music- I love and his style- two thumbs up!

Meet #4 Dopeadelicz
The band of Fantastic Four, their journey was kind of REVERSE. In the sense- they started American style and landed back in everything Indian style. Hindi, Tamil, Malyalam, Marathi- they rap it all! Indie-cool, eh?Talking about style, what (or who) stands out? Their lead rapper- Tony Sebastian (aka stony_psyko). Why, you ask? Look at his picture below. Right outta Snoop Dogg’s music video?! Okay, whatever! I like it!

 Meet #5 Raja Kumari
She is UNIQUE. She is BRILLIANT. She is everything INDIAN. Born and raised in America but totally Indian at heart. She moved back to her roots because she felt the connect and wanted to give back, as she once said. Having worked with big names in US- Gwen Stefani, Iggy Azalea, Dirty South, Fallout Boy (to name a few), she has toured the world (almost) and is now a FORCE to be reckoned with! Achievements are plenty (already) and her music rules the Hip-Hop scene (kind of)!
Her style? You CAN’T miss her. She is every bit ODD-CAT, famously called the Royalty of Hip-Hop. Lol!

Meet #6 Slow Cheetah (aka Chaitanya Sharma)
Another one from Mumbai, this one is a dapper dude! Acting, rapping- he has done it all. Jack of many but master of one is how he can be described. Not holding back, he is a promising rapper.
Style wise? Let me start by saying, he recently walked the ramp at LFW and is very “guy next door”.

I have often heard of passion turning into “dream come true” experience. And, this “everything cool creature” has lived it. From writing poetry in school to writing rap for a living, I love how she breaks all gender stereotypes. Standing her ground on sticking to meaningful lyrics, she is one of a kind.
And her style? I’ll just say- she is getting some spunk into junk!

This Bengaluru Boy’s rap is fusion at its best. He raps in English & Carnatic with beats from Hip-Hop fused with Indian classical. He created a niche from himself and music in movies hasn’t been easy. But who says- success comes easy?!
His style? Fuss-free! Hoodies, sneakers and a crooked kinda smile.

Privileged or not, talent speaks for itself. This is the case with this flamboyant rapper. Born in HongKong, raised in Moscow, Famous (now) in India, he is channeling the vibe of “Crazy Rich Indians” (there’s nothing wrong in that, btw). He is a global artist, FYI and has received adulation globally. You have to hear his music to understand what I’m really saying here.
